on being the eighth out of seven

Sometimes I get really into a certain topic.
Like really, really into a topic.

There's usually no rhyme or reason for this. I just randomly stumble across a piece of information which sneakily steals my attention and then BOOM, ten hours of Google later I'm suddenly an expert in said topic. Excuse me, a top expert. I immerse myself in said topic and can't stop reading about it, learning about it, and stalking it (creep creep) (promise no people stalking). I guess you could say I have obsessions.

My latest obsession is over the start of the space program.

I KNOW. AREN'T WE ALL OBSESSED WITH THAT?!

As I mentioned one or four times before, I started watching The Astronaut's Wives Club. Which led to me Googling the cuh-rap outta the Mercury 7 and everything or anything related. I could not get enough. Which led to my mother buying the book for me (probably in an attempt to shut me up). Which led to long discussions with my grandfather who worked with NASA in its early years. Which led to YouTube-ing news coverage videos from the launches and blah blah blah, promise I'm not crazy

I was about to type out that there are several reasons why I am obsessed with NASA's early years, but then I realized I couldn't think of one legitimate reason I became so intrigued. I just am. 'Cause my brain said so, that's why! Alan, Gus, Wally, Gordo, Deke, John, and Scott. Louise, Betty, Jo, Trudy, Marge, Annie, and Rene. I guess you could say we're all biffles and I am the eighth of Mercury 7, obviously. I mean I do live in Houston so Houston, we do not have a problem with this intrigue of mine.

I'm obsessed. You get it. Moving on.

Reasons my obsession makes no sense:

one ||
I wrote an entire post once about how I was a terrible, disappointing wife. The sixties would have destroyed my set-up of no cooking, all eating, and flat, greasy ponytail hair. Sometimes I wonder just how those women got their hair so flouncy, bouncy and fun. And their cat eyes so perfectly curved. And their jello salads so...well, jello salads are just gross.

two ||
I am terrified of the thought of space. The thought of being straight up shot off into oblivion. I panic on roller coasters that have drops in them so ain't nobody (me) got time to have a permanent stomach-in-throat feeling. But I'm sure I wouldn't be the first person to wet my pants in an astronaut's suit, amiright or am I right?

Let's ignore the facts that I could never be an astronaut for important reasons of intellectual levels. We'll stick to it's because I'm scared of stomach-in-throat feeling. That makes more sense.

three ||
On that note, the thought of having my husband blasted off into the open ends of space would make me sick to my stomach. I am a top notch worrier. Like I could get a medal for worrying and then worry that I wasn't worrying enough. I worry when Freddie rides his bike without a helmet so I can't imagine how I feel with him shooting off to space. Although...space suits have helmets so maybe I'd be better with him doing that on a week night...

So here, I'll go from weird blogger to good little blogger in a jiffy and make this a book review post.
The Astronaut's Wive Club: read it.
While you're at it you should probably read Aziz Ansari's Modern Romance.
And all of Liane Moriarty's books.

Back to weird blogging...
What are you obsessed/fascinated/intriqued with in the totally not weird at all obsessed kind of way?

currently: the omg-it's-already-february edition

It's the first Wednesday of the month which means several things.
A) Holy Cuhrap, it's already a new month.
B) It's not a Friday. Sad.
C) It's time for this month's Currently link-up.

hearting
Ricky. All day, every day. Most of the time I just squeeze his head and squeal in a high-pitched voice how much I love him. It's really obnoxious and I'm sure he hearts it a lot when I do that.
reading
I am finally reading Yes, Please--only several months late. As I read this book and other auto-biographies I often wonder how people remember such specific details and stories from their childhoods. They remember stories that have shaped them into the man or woman they are today whereas I remember stories like...the one time a librarian made me cry? Or when my sister was born? Oh wait! I remember one time I hid my vitamin so I didn't have to take it. <---- total autobiography material.
pinning
Did you ever find an article of clothing after which you had pining for months and months and it's like the stars aligned and life is just grand?! Yes, clothes are that important and yes, that happened to me this week. Because I found the most perfect, beautiful military style jacket and I'm never taking it off. Ever. I've been pinning lots of ways to wear it and I've noticed that none of them suggest wearing it with leotards and tights so I guess that's the one thing with which I won't wear it. And yes, I can totally practice the oh-my-gosh -the-wind-is-blowing-my-hair-but-I-want-to-see-I-can-still-walk-in-a-straight-line-while-drunk-on-coffee look.
eating
Well this second currently I'm eating an apple, but this week currently I'm eating a lot of sweet potatoes. They are sweet. They are potato-ey. They are delicious. I want to eat them all.
...but I still want to eat chocolate, too.
anticipating
Valentine's Day because I lurve a good 'ole fashioned cheesy V-day gift and I can't wait to give Freddie's his annual dose of cheesiness.
Spoiler alert: I'm not gifting him bananas.

wishlisting
This necklace. Sa-woon.
I went from knowing that gold bar necklaces were all the rage to kind of caring that they were all the rage to obsessively thinking about this particular gold bar Roman numeral necklace and how it would be all the rage around my neck. Do you think the ancient Romans are like Thank God! Finally our numeric system is trendy again!?

creating
Something about the holidays makes me want to quit my job and become a crafting housewife. Not a cleaning/doing housework housewife, but a crafting housewife. Me and the mod podge kickin'' it back all day, every day. We're about to get real Christmas-y and glitterfied up in here.

reading
Yes, Please by Amy Poehler. My weekend plans include this book and my laughs. That's all, folks.

loving
Last Tuesday when it was decided we would be driving to Georgia that Friday I begged/straight up told my sister she would be taking anniversary pictures of us while we were in town. I love them! I am loving them! I will always love them! And so on and so forth. It was about 40 degrees and windy and we only had an hour to get them done, but man oh man! Ann made 365 (plus) days look good on us Weiss folk.

anticipating
We've been saving up to buy a new couch. Not just any couch, but a beautiful humongo sectional couch...that doesn't have wires sticking up your butt when you sit like our current couch does. I mean, we will be living the high life! No booty wires?! After months of planning it, discussing where it should go, measuring and remeasuring and re-re-measuring, and more discussing/changing minds of where it should go, we are finally able to get it.
And now Ricky wants to wait it out until Black Friday since we're so close. My poor booty. What's a few more weeks of sticky in your booty wires, I guess?

Happy Friday!
Are you currently loving that it's the freaking weekend?

a first grade fail

Librarians. I mean, amiright? Need I say more? And all that jazz.
One Word. Four Syllables. An eternity of fear.

Let me explain. Kindergarten was the year when big things started to happen to me. Kindergarten was when I realized that if I behaved my clothespin could stay on the green light. Kindergarten was when I became so crazy about keeping my pin on green that I never misbehaved. Or misspoke. Or really did anything. Kindergarten was when I became deathly afraid of... breaking the rules.

Dun dun dun. A fear that is still 100% ingrained in me today, 20 years later. If only adulthood was as simple as moving one's clothespin up the traffic light... hashtag: life's deep thoughts.
Velvet green pants to symbolize my green light lifestyle. #thuglife.

Now at the end of one's Kindergarten year getting moved up to first grade is tres exciting. As in even more exciting than an ice cream truck driving down your street. Or than your pin staying on green for the entire school year (which yes, my pin did stay on green the entire year. 5-year old hair flip). First grade was a big deal. A new building. Hallways with the big bad second and third graders. Shucks! First grade was life and 5-almost-6 year old Emily was so ready for that life.

Except...I wasn't. Kindergarteners didn't share hallways with the big kids, but they did get to do big kid things like check out library books. Hello! So official. Brush yo shoulders off official. In an attempt to start living my first grade/uber mature human being life,  I checked out a library book. No big deal, right? Wrong. So wrong because 5-almost-6 year old Emily lost the library book. Which also appears to be no big deal, BUT it is a very big deal to lose a school's library book. Very. Big. Deal.
Oh, dahhhhhh-ling. I probably left the book in my dressing room!

Anxious-please-don't-move-my-clothespin-to-yellow Emily was quite nervous to tell the librarian that the book had vanished. You can go to jail for such a crime! Kindergarten yellow light jail! But alas, Miss Librarian found out of my crime and gave me my punishment.

I would not be allowed to move up to first grade if I didn't find that book before the end of the school year.

The horror! The embarrassment! The pain! In 5 seconds I had gone from green light star to worst human being in all the Kindergarten land! I would be a repeat. A lost library book repeat with a yellow light status for the rest of my years.

I came home in tears trying to explain to my mother the travesty that now was my little life. And what did my mother do? She laughed. She laughed because librarians have no control over who moves up to first grade. She laughed because it was a library book. But mostly I'm sure she was secretly laughing because her 5-almost-6 year old daughter was convinced that her life was over.

Guess what? I didn't find the library book before the end of the school year. Guess what? I also didn't have to repeat Kindergarten. Guess what? My life clothespin is still on green.
First day of first grade? Check. Creepy don't mess with me librarian smile? Check.
Talk to the hand, Miss Librarian. Talk to the hand.

<Insert beginning paragraph about me loving link-ups (Thanks, Jenna and Anne!).>

Ok, got it? Let's get on with it.
cooking
I feel like y'all know by now that I can never answer this question as myself, but rather as what is Frederick currently cooking? And I'll tell ya what, Frederick has been on this bread kick lately. I'm talking he's churned out 6 loaves in 2 weekends. My could-eat-carbs-all-day-'erry-day self is loving it. What else does one need in life other than a warm homemade loaf of bread and a tub of truffle butter? Nada. Pictured above is his version of a Hiroshima loaf. Too soon?

watching
It's been very hard for me to let go of the fact that A) we finished the series of Dexter B) the ending...'nuff said. and C) I can't find another show that warrants my obsession like the Dex. However, Game of Thrones is wonderful and everyone who is anyone should be watching it and/or reading it.

planning
A family vaca to California! I think the furthest "west" I've been is...Louisiana? Does that even count? My east coast lovin' legs can't wait to stand on west coast ground. I'm also a tad excited about seeing one of my very best friends and partying it up at Disneyland. Just a tad.

reading
Who doesn't love a good 'ole beach book that you can knock out 10 chapters in record time while sunning it up?

wearing
So here we are. 14 shows of Spamalot later with only 3 shows left. I'm not sure what I'll wear after this weekend when my seaweed hair won't be an everyday accessory...

Anyone else sporting some seaweed hair as of late?

currently

When Jenna emailed me about this Currently linkup I wanted to cry tears of joy. What are linkups if not gifts from the blog gods to spurn the writer's block gods? If you haven't noticed, I've been rather MIA (but really if you haven't noticed then bless you). Well that's because....::drum roll:: I'm performing in a show downtown and my life has become the following: teach, teach, teach, consider doing laundry, teach, rehearse, rehearse, rehearse, see Freds for 30 minutes, sleep. Repeat.

Let's get on with it then.

cooking
Abso-toot-ley nothing. I'm lucky if I have time to grab a granola bar and some Goldfish (winning) between work and rehearsal. I will tell you what I'm currently eating since you are so curious. Two words: frozen grapes. Holy Mother of a Raisin. Yum, yum, yum. Pretty sure we go through a bag every two nights. Or maybe a bag every night but who's counting?

reading
Growing Up Duggar. Yeah, that's right, I'm reading about the Duggars. Their life fascinates me so why not read about it? Don't worry Frederick, I'm not getting any Let's have 19 kids! ideas (because I'm having the let's have 20 kids ideas!) (the amount of jk-ness in that comment before is unreal. No, 20 kids for me, thank you though).

wearing
If I'm being really honest here I have to say I am wearing seaweed hair and neon-colored bras and not much else. Thanks, Spamalot. Your costuming is causing me to skip the copious amounts of chocolate I want to destroy every night.

loving
This weather (minus the amount of bugs in the low country. What in the world? Ew). Freddie and I try to spend 22 hours of the weekend days outside and it is heaven. I even turned a slightly less color of pale. It's really all just so magical. Hashtag: pinch me. Charleston, you are beautiful, in case you haven't heard.

anticipating
Spamalot opening tomorrow night. That's right...tomorrow night. As in one day away. As in wow. We have 8 regular shows and then 9 shows part of the Piccolo Spoleto Festival (which I cannot believe I get to be part of! Look it up, it's an amazing, amazing arts festival).

What have you been up to? Anyone else been gorging on frozen grapes and not chocolate lately?
